Karangahake

The last two days have been mostly travel for me. Yesterday was rainy and noting for me to shoot along the way. Today had some nice sun and I made a stop at a waterfalls and an old Gold Mining area as I traveled North. The Gold mines were from the 1880’s and the area produced about 60% of New Zealand’s gold up to the 1950’s when the mines were abandoned. Now you can walk along the tracks of the ore carts and go through some of the tunnels carved into solid stone.

A waterfall along the way.

These falls re just below the upper one and have a nice little rainbow at the base.

This is one of the old ore carts from the gold mines.

Here is the track going into one of the tunnels.

This tunnel has several “windows” looking out into the gorge.

This is the view out of one of the windows.

The tracks emerge from the tunnel here and there and run along the cliff for a bit.

This is the gorge below the mines.

Can’t go a day without a nice New Zealand Tree Fern photo.

Karangahake-39
This is new growth coming springing from the top of one of the tree ferns. It’s about the size of your fist.

The river just below the mines, taken from a suspension bridge crossing. This could be Oregon!
