Fox Glacier to Omarama

Yesterday, I didn’t move very far. Just about 15 miles from Franz Josef Glacier to Fox Glacier. Today, I did some long distance traveling. I started out with another hike in to Lake Matheson to see if I could get a better reflection and less cloud interference. It was a little bit better than yesterday afternoon, so it was worth the 1 1/2 hour hike.

Then I started my long trip down the coast to Haast, then inland through Haast Pass past beautiful mountains, lakes and waterfalls and also over Lindis Pass to get me relatively close to the east side of Mount Cook. Tomorrow, weather permitting, I should be within striking distance of the mountain.

Night-20
Last night, I made this photo of the mountains from my campsite. It is illuminated by nothing but moonlight. If I were a cat, this is probably what nighttime would look like to me. The bright specks in the sky are stars.

This morning’s view of Lake Matheson. Just slightly fewer clouds.

An early morning view of Fox Glacier.

A roadside scene along my route.

This is the view from Knight’s Point.

HaastPassWater-3
This is Thunder Falls, just over the summit of Haast Pass. I wanted to fly the DJU Inspire here, but couldn’t get enough GPS Satellites in the narrow canyon.

HaastPassWater-5
These Rapids are called “The Gates of Haast”. I did manage to do a flight here.

HaastPassWater-8
This is Fantail Falls. I also flew the Inspire here.

HaastPassWater-20
This is called the Blue Pools. I was going to fly the Inspire here, but a tour bus with about 40 backpackers showed up and started jumping off the suspension bridge that I shot this from. I high tailed it out of there.

Another mountain view from the Haast Pass area.

This is Lake Hawea with some of the Southern Alps in the background.
