I’m still exploring in the Catlins. THis morning, it was sunnier than I had expected. Some high clouds, but not bad. I was planning on a day of rain. I almost drove away from some good shots in my rush to get out and take advantage of the weather. I left the campsite and got about a mile down the road where I could catch a glimpse of the beach. There were some really big waves breaking and to make it even better, there was a fierce wind blowing offshore that blew the spray backwards off the wave crests. I found a beach access and did a few stills, but mostly video since this kind of action is more appropriate for motion than still. Then I backtracked to the “Petrified Forest” cove and the waves were really great there too. They were crashing on the rocks and jetting spray up 30 or 40 feet. The area that I had been walking around on yesterday looking for Penguins was now a foamy maelstrom of surf. I wound up filming in that area for about an hour before I finally hit the road for my planned waterfalls.
I stopped at McLean Falls, Matai Falls, Horseshoe Falls, and Purakaunui Falls. The weather held out for me the whole time and just as I was getting back to the motorhome after Purakaunui Falls did the first few raindrops start to fall. It then rained for about 3 hours, but cleared off about 5:30.
Here’s one of the stills I shot of the windblown surf. I have loads of great video scenes.
I haven’t done a Fern Photo in a few days, so here ya go!
