Yesterday was a rainy day. I drove to as area of the North East Pacific Coast that has New Zealand Fur Seal colonies and camped there for the night. Today, the weather was back to sunshine so I spent the day filming the seals, some nice waves crashing on the rocks and some surprising snowy mountains. The mountains were surprising because as I drove into the area, there was a solid low cloud cover and I didn’t know there were any mountains around. This morning when the clouds cleared, Surprise! The high elevations seemed to have gotten some snow from yesterday’s precipitation because they had a nice fresh coating on their peaks. The other interesting feature in the area was a small stream with a waterfall near one of the seal colonies. Some of the young seal pups like to swim upstream and play in a pool below the waterfall. It’s more of a climb than a swim for them because the stream is a series of cascades and pools that they have to make their way up. The waterfall is about a quarter mile from the beach so its a considerable journey. I only shot video up there because they are frolicking and darting around so fast that a still photo doesn’t do it justice. I also shot mostly video of the seal colonies and crashing waves.
Didn’t see this coming. When yesterday’s clouds cleared away, guess what? There are mountains near the coast.
Here, the mountains are reflected in a tidal pool.
Here a little seal pup is taking a snooze on a rock in the morning sun.
Not far away, an adult seal is also drying its fur in the warm sun.
