Milford Sound

Today was an interesting day. As expected, the pass closed and remains closed until at least sometime tomorrow. It could be another day. As I suspected, it is closed due to avalanche danger rather than snow accumulation on the highway. The snow lever didn’t get down to the altitude of the pass last night. But tonight, it may snow that low. The other reason the road is closed is that beyond the pass there are many trees down on the highway. It’s been blowing a true gale most of the day. The motorhome has been rocking back and forth in the strong so hard that at times I’ve had cabinets fly open. I was worried for awhile about the vent hatch on my roof. The winds were pulling it up enough for me to see a crack of daylight. If it had gone up just a little bit more, it might have caught the wind and ripped off. That would be bad, I don’t need a hole in the roof. The rains were coming horizontally for much of the afternoon. There was a brief pause, maybe the eye of the storm passing, but now it’s back at it, albeit with a little less wind. During the brief interlude, there were a couple little spots of sun breaking through so I scrambled outside and was able to shoot some photos for a few minutes. Now the surrounding mountains are back in the rain clouds.

This is the same shot that I did yesterday afternoon with some little trickling waterfalls. Now, after a few hours of rain, they are raging torrents. With the gale force winds, some of the water isn’t even making it down to the ground, it gets blown sideways over to the next waterfall.

A little bit of sun is sneaking through and making the wet rock faces glisten.

The Cleddau River which borders the campground I’m staying in is now twice the size it was yesterday.

Some of the waterfalls enjoy a little spot of sun.

This one is getting blown sideways as it falls.

This is the view up the valley toward the pass. No new snow this low, but tons of water.

Some nice “God Rays” coming down through one of the holes in the sky.

A wider view of the rays. They are rare and when they do happen, they don’t last too long. This one was good for about a minute.
